چکیده
Facial prosthetics has a long history that extends back to ancient man. The course of facial prosthetics has altered over time as improvement in surgical techniques and materials arrived. The need for facial prosthetics presumably also altered over time with social changes and changes in disease management. The past century has brought several remarkable changes that influenced the delivery of facial prosthetic care. After the Second World War, the availability of acrylic resins had a major impact on facial prosthetics, as did the rapid advances made by reconstructive surgery. This was followed by the introduction of silicone elastomers in the 1960s. By the late 1970s, silicone elastomers were in widespread use in facial prosthesis construction. The introduction of osseointegrated implants into facial prosthetic care emerged in the 1980s and was in widespread international use by the early 1990s. As remarkable as these developments were, perhaps even more notable is that the fundamental techniques used to design and construct facial prostheses remain unchanged. For over half a century we have become adept at optimizing every possible potential of available materials to enhance treatment outcomes with facial prosthetics. As laudable as these endeavours are, little progress has been made in advancing fundamental techniques employed in facial prosthesis design and construction. To realise the future potential of facial prosthetics as a modality of head and

Huge Facial Desmoid Tumors with Neck Extension: A Case Report
Introduction: Desmoid tumors are very rare, benign fibrous neoplasms arise from the musculoaponeurotic structures throughout the body. Case Report: The patient was a seven-year old boy with a large mandibular mass growing over a period of six months. His CT-scan showed a large mass, 13 cm in diameter in the cheek area extending to the neck and trachea. Biopsy was compatible with desmoid fib...
متن کاملPromising Technique for Facial Nerve Reconstruction in Extended Parotidectomy
Introduction: Malignant tumors of the parotid gland account scarcely for 5% of all head and neck tumors. Most of these neoplasms have a high tendency for recurrence, local infiltration, perineural extension, and metastasis. Although uncommon, these malignant tumors require complex surgical treatment sometimes involving a total parotidectomy including a complete facial nerve resection. Severe fu...
متن کاملImplant-Based Prosthetic Reconstruction in Patients with Congenital Ear Defects (Technical Note)
Background and aims: Loss of all or part of the ear is one of the significant defects in the head and neck area (regardless of the cause) that can result from trauma, cancer, congenital diseases, or surgery to remove benign tumors. These defects can be reconstructed with the help of surgical procedures or cosmetic prostheses. However, due to the complex structure of the ear, reconstructive surg...
متن کاملFacial Nerve Monitoring During Parotidectomy: A Two-Center Retrospective Study
Introduction: We present a retrospective two-center study series and discussion of the current literature to assess the benefits of facial nerve monitoring during parotidectomy. Materials and Methods: From 2007 to 2012, 128 parotidectomies were performed in 125 patients. Of these, 47 procedures were performed without facial nerve monitoring (group 1) and 81 with facial nerve monitoring (group 2...
متن کاملResults of End-To-Side Hypoglossal-Facial Nerve Anastomosis in Facial Paralysis after Skull Base Surgery
Introduction: The primary aim of facial reanimation surgery is to restore tone, symmetry, and movement to the paralyzed face. Hypoglossal-facial end-to-side anastomosis provides satisfactory facial reanimation in the irreversible proximal injury of the facial nerve. This study discussed the facial function results of end-to-side anastomosing of hypoglossal nerve to facial nerve when the i...
